Read MoreGalerie Gmurzynska installs and displays Primo Piano II (1962) in the heart of Zürich, Paradeplatz this month.
Originally installed in the fields surrounding the David Smith's Bolton Landing home and studio, Primo Piano II is one of the few pieces from the fields at Bolton Landing to remain in private hands The work is a powerful example of Smith's transcendence of the stark divide between the sculptor's three-dimensional conceptualization and the painter's understanding of color and surface. The highly reflective, polished stainless steel plane that caps the work contrasts dramatically with the dark inverted teardrop that it shades. Meanwhile, the shifting lines and planes of the white-painted steel create visual movement that projects the sculpture into its surrounding space.
Galerie Gmurzynska is pleased to present this installation alongside Working Surface: a survey of David Smith's drawings, paintings & sculptures, 1932-1963.
