"I earned my living as a book illustrator. There was a lot of work for a professional artist with a rich imagination. The attitude of censorship to graphic art was more liberal than that to painting and one could take the liberty of experimenting. Thus, in the late 1950s, I tried to paste on different clippings, combining them with quill, monotype and paintwork. Then collages appeared and I plunged into an investigation of this technique."
