Galerie Gmurzynska presents a new publication “Hollywood Is Hell” by James Franco. This exhibition catalog spans the artist's work from his early paintings in 2009/2010 to his large collage/ assemblage works that were created during the pandemic. These reflect the apocalyptic energy of the streets during lockdown, mixed with iconography from the golden years of Hollywood, popular culture, fashion, as well as many autobiographical touches, such as the Gucci collection he advertised, the bed frame of Spring Breakers, or photos of street corners in downtown Los Angeles. Having spent years studying life drawing, some of the images, especially the works on paper, burst with exquisite detail, cutting through the chaos of the larger pieces.
The Exhibition Catalog includes original texts from Jerome Neutres, Introduction by Isabelle Bscher and Interview by Magnus Resch.
