Galerie Gmurzynska is delighted to participate in the inaugural edition of the new Artmonte-Carlo – Salon d’Art Fair.
The selection of works to be presented in Monte Carlo has been specially curated for the connoisseurship audience, giving an overview of Galerie Gmurzynska’s fifty years of programming, with a focus on modern and postwar masters including Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Wifredo Lam, Francis Bacon and Fernando Botero.
Highlights include Picasso’s austere still life Verre et radis (Glass and radishes) from 1944.
Painted under critical conditions in his studio on the rue des Grands-Augustins in the rive gauche 6th arrondissement during the last months of World War II, Verre et radis is a testament to Picasso’s ability to evoke daily life and his own stark environment in occupied Paris by formally economic means, anticipating the Liberation and with it the hopeful return to freedom, plenitude, and joy for life.
A fine selection of Picasso’s ceramics he produced in Vallauris, complement this presentation.
Galerie Gmurzynska will further present a major bronze by Joan Miró, another key protagonist of twentieth century modern art.
At a commanding height, the 1968 Femme manifests Miró’s masterful translation of his biomorphic imagery into sculptural form, hovering between figuration and abstraction. The edition’s significance – widely discussed in the literature on Miró and exhibited internationally from MoMA, New York to the Museo Thyssen Bornemisza in Madrid – is evidenced by the fact that Femme today is on permanent display at the Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid and at the Fondació Joan Miró, Barcelona.
Rounding out this prime selection of works is a small showcase of Wifredo Lam’s fantastic anthropomorphic canvases, whose work can currently be seen in the critically acclaimed retrospective at the Reina Sofia, Madrid from where it will travel to Tate Modern, London this autumn.
Establishing an art-historical bridge to these central positions of twentieth century modern art, the booth will further comprise an important and intimate late portrait by Francis Bacon and the widely recognized figurative works by renowned Colombian painter Fernando Botero.
Galerie Gmurzynska is looking forward to welcoming you at booth A6.
