Retrospective of Important 20th Century Drawings
Joan Miró, Untitled (Drawing-Collage) – August 5, 1933
Galerie Gmurzynska is proud to participate in the 7th Zuger Kunstnacht, an art event with special exhibitions in various galleries, museums and other cultural institutions in Zug, Switzerland. Galerie Gmurzynska will be showing a diverse selection of drawings created by outstanding artists of the 20th century.
For centuries drawings were preparatory works for later paintings: Sketches au naturel that provided the material that the artist would later elaborate and integrate in his paintings. This function didn’t vanish with the breakthrough of Modern Art, but the drawings did develop a new, own status as independent works. Winning an autonomous status for the drawing was an important impulse for the development of techniques, formats and forms of expression.
Thus, the drawings of the Masters of the 20th Century give us an extraordinary insight in the creation process of the artists as well as directly in their most authentic manufactural skills.
Artists like Joan Miró, Lyonel Feininger, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner or Wifredo Lam are some of the most outstanding masters of this subtle yet expressive technique.
